Less than a mile from the traffic of I-90 in Post Falls, Q’emiln Park (pronounced ka-mee-lin) is a welcome and family-friendly spot for road-weary travelers.
After being cooped up in the car on a rather hot afternoon, my 7-year old daughter and I needed an easy-to-access place to stretch our legs and have a little fun. Fortunately, Q’emiln Park met all our needs.
Q’emiln Park is operated the city of Post Falls and is one of several public parks in the area. The park sits on the banks of the Spokane River and is ideal for swimming, BBQing, boating, volleyball, picnicking, and playing. The swimming areas are clearly marked and separate from the boat launch area. There are two covered picnic areas and several tables scattered around the park shaded by the many large and mature trees. The beach area is more dirt than sand, but I witnessed determined children creating fine castles and moats despite the less-than-ideal building medium.
My daughter had a grand time splashing in the cool waters of the Spokane River as I enjoyed the shade nearby. Several kids played on the well-appointed playground and other families spread out lunches on the grass or nearby tables. A local food truck offered an array of cold treats to visitors on this hot afternoon.
The park, sand volleyball courts, boat launch, and picnic shelters are all free to use. Some free parking is available on the street, and parking in the nearby lot will cost you $3.50/day and busses cost $10/day. The large covered pavilion is available for reservation if your group needs a larger space. The park’s restrooms had running water and were very convenient for cleaning up after a dip in the river or a dig through the dirt. Although we didn’t take advantage, a trail map showed many short hiking paths (all less than one mile long) and some nearby rock climbing for beginning-to-intermediate climbers.
Even though we only had time for a short visit, we could have easily spent the entire day enjoying Q’emiln Park. The wide variety of amenities and accessibility really make this park ideal for families and visitors of all ages.♦
