Painted rocks are an upcoming craze that will “rock your socks off.” A bit like geocaching, you can leave and take rocks you find. The art work can range from amateur (lots of kids do this) to down-right Picasso. People from all over the state of Idaho have taken to this new found adventure and are having a blast with it. Just in the Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho area alone the following has become so big there are several social media groups who post about it. If you can’t find the time to paint or “hunt’ for rocks, just follow the CDA Rocks Facebook page for a daily dose of smile.
Karen Lowe of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho has left rocks around the McGrane center and the library in Hayden. Her rocks are, “awareness rocks” that have been painted with the ribbons the represent Autism, Uterine Cancer, and Cyclic Vomiting syndrome. Many users paint rocks with images that hold emotional value to them like Karen.
Micheline Riley of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho had two major neck surgeries in 2015 and 2016 which resulted in C5-Palsy. She relearned how to write and then paint. “I love the idea of placing rocks out for others to find….creating great memories of their adventures.” said Micheline.
Others paint simply for the enjoyment and the ability to make someone else smile. Mac McAnallen of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho said that he and his wife first painted and hid a rock for their four-year-old neighbor to find. “This is what got us hooked, seeing (the child’s) smile when he found it” said McAnallen.
There are even some four legged rock hunters out there. Harvey had a very special “big boy” day when he found a painted rock with the word Idaho scrawled across the front. Angie Hacker-Christison shared a delightful picture of this proud moment for other users to gush over.
Doenene Lockwood, soon to be resident of Coeur d’Alene said, “We are building our retirement home in Coeur d’ Alene and I wanted to do something fun to start to connect with the community.” Which is the underlying theme of this state wide art project. It’s a great way to connect to other people in the community and share a smile.♦
