A 61 year-old volunteer-run event marks the start of fishing season and provides free breakfast to locals and visitors alike.
Before the sun rises on the Friday of Memorial Day weekend, the bustling has already begun: canopies set up, booths with local vendors’ wares put on display, people slowly trickle in – some have even waited overnight.
When morning finally arrives, the warm scent of home-cooked food has filled the air, as a team of volunteers working in shifts prepares breakfast for the accumulating guests. Eventually, as the day passes, a line-up of visitors winds and curls its way onto Bridge Street.
It’s Saint Anthony’s Fisherman’s Breakfast, an annual event, a long-standing tradition, now in its 61st year.
When it started in 1955, The Fisherman’s Breakfast provided a warm cup of coffee to eager fishermen passing through town headed in the direction of Island Park. The next year, it was a cup of coffee and a donut. Over time, the breakfast has grown: Today, up to 4,500 people stream to Saint Anthony to enjoy a full meal of pancakes, sausages, hash-brown potatoes – all smothered in maple syrup – coffee, milk, and soft drinks. For free!
The Fisherman’s Breakfast takes place in Saint Anthony’s Clyde Keefer Memorial Park, which is actually a small island, located along Henry’s Fork of the Snake River.
It’s not just about the food. The Fisherman’s Breakfast is the perfect chance to reconnect with friends and family, meet with neighbors, greet out-of-town visitors. The mood is light and cheerful. Even when it rains. The event takes place rain or shine or in extreme windy conditions. Some years, it has even snowed – but that has never stopped anyone from showing up.
In addition, local musicians and Cowboy poets will entertain the crowd and the National Guard does its colors mid-morning.
The event, put on by The Fisherman’s Breakfast Committee, a subset of the Greater St. Anthony Chamber of Commerce, is volunteer-run. Both help and donations are always welcome.
Though the Breakfast marks the official start to Fishing Season, you don’t need to be a fisherman to enjoy it. Everyone is welcome. The event begins at 6am and lasts until the food is gone, generally around 1pm.
So, this year, on May 27th, the Friday of Memorial Day weekend, come to Saint Anthony and join in this tradition, the food and the fun, and kick off the fishing season with this event the whole family can enjoy!♦
