– Raising funds to conserve and educate
"Eastern Idaho is a fly fisherman's Nirvana. There are so many rivers, streams and lakes here that one lifetime is simply not enough to fish them all,” comments Roger Blew, member of the Snake River Cutthroats Club since 1995.
The club is unique in that it is an affiliated chapter of both Trout Unlimited and the International Federation of Fly Fishers. This dedicated group of fishermen organize the Fly Tying Expo to raise money used to support fisheries conservation and education in eastern Idaho. The Expo has raised more than a quarter million dollars over the past 12 years.
Each year, a different fly is selected and featured at the expo. This year’s fly is Idaho local Buck Goodrich’s Brown Drake. Expert fly tiers from all around the world gather to share and learn new techniques; some are even recipients of the prestigious Buz Buszek Award which is given to acknowledge contributions to the art of fly tying. The Eastern Idaho Fly Tying and Fly Fishing Expo is recognized as one of the best fly fishing shows in the US.
At the Expo, there are free presentations by experts who teach destination/technique fly tying. Idaho Fishing Outfitters, southeast Idaho’s newest full-service fishing shop off highway 20 in Rigby, will be at the Expo. They carry all types of fishing tackle, including fly fishing and tying supplies. In addition to vendors and booths displaying and selling gear, there are 17 different workshops offered at the expo ranging in topic from fly tying, beginning fly casting, women’s fly fishing, and more.
Saturday evening, a banquet and auctions will be held, with an opportunity for bidders to win a Clackacraft drift boat. Youth activities and programs are available, teaching kids 3 years and older fly tying, knot tying, and fly casting, all of which are free. There truly is something for anglers of all abilities at the Expo.
As part of the Expo, the Fly Fishing Film Tour is held at the Colonial Theater on Friday, April 21 at 7:30.
Roger explains, “We tend to overlook the great fly fishing culture that exists in eastern Idaho. This area is the birthplace of many great fly fishing traditions and has been home to many fly fishing legends. Among these traditions and legends are the people who created many of the fly patterns, and the techniques to tie them, that are known and used by fly tiers and fishers all around the world. The fly fishing culture that those legends created in eastern Idaho over the last hundred years continues to grow. We would love to have our friends and neighbors take the opportunity to participate in the Expo to help us protect the great fishing opportunities we have in our area.”♦
